I am fortunate to actually participate in this model classroom environment - Grade 8 History Lesson - I'm a student who is participating in a Moodle workshop & blogging it at the same time. Mark and Charles are facilitating the lesson. The presenters are from Bryan, TX - http://moodel.bryanisd.org . What is a 5e lesson? Not sure but hope to find out. The focus of the lesson is on tariffs - which students have a difficult time grasping.
Phase 1: Students read a scenario then answer a multiple choice question. Response appears directly below the question. This anticipatory set engages the student right from the start of the lesson. The teacher can make sure students get into the lesson and answer the question. Typically this takes 2-3 minutes. Phase 2: Several discussion questions are used in a forum style to explore the concept further with leading questions. Moodle forms allow you to limit the number of posts to a forum area. Interesting - Mark was not able to turn on the reply button in Moodle so I could not reply to the forum questions Phase 3: Read over notes then take notes. A PDF template is provided for students to structure their notes on the reading. Phase 4: Elaborate on the concept - Here students use a Wiki to elaborate on the concept. The Intel Education - Showing Evidence Tool - simplified version www.intel.com/education/showingevidence is ued to elaborate on the concept: Your Claim and evidence for the claim. Students can leave comments on each others work. The Showing Evidence Tool helps students learn how to construct well-reasoned arguments and prove their case with credible evidence. Phase 5: Quiz - evaluation of the concepts. More info on a 5e lesson: Research: Web-based learning reaches the introvert where lab-based learning reach the extrovert. Blended instruction is where they use Moodle. Research supports this. Utilizing both formats meets the way students communicate. This is my experience as well. Moodle is an enhancement to the classroom. Check out the various studies on the net. Ex: 1 5e -1. ENGAGE,2. EXPLORE,3. EXPLAIN,4. ELABORATE, 5.EVALUATE The Intel project - group work engaged the extrovert, where the web-based moodle environment engaged the introvert. Last update : 30-06-2008 15:23
