E-learning Symposium - George Mason University

Just had a discussion with Vint Cerf - "father of the internet" - vice president of Google - at George Mason University.  Dr. Cerf spoke and I was fascinated with his talk and what he does.

He discussed many emerging technologies with a focus on Google.  Google Earth, Ocean, Sky, Mars, Wave, Power Meter.  Wave is an interesting concept which connects Email, IM, Social networks such as Facebook to an network.  Each of these individual tools talk to each other through Wave.  You can tweet about something and it will be present/available through email, Facebook , Skype, IM…etc.

He talked about cloud computing and how intercloud vocabulary & protocols have not yet been invented.  Cloud computing model moves the notion from computing on a laptop/workstation to computing on a super server.  Computing power can be shifted in a cloud environment to handle certain tasks providing power to do research.  The challenge now is to have Google, Microsoft, Amazon…etc clouds talk to each other.

Dr. Cerf also talked about sensory networks and how data can be collected and analyzed.  He touched on how environmental sensors can be used to collect data and provide feedback on the decisions we make.

Dr. Cerf concluded his keynote talk about Interplanetary Internet.  He talked about the various nodes in the universe and how this information network can be accessed on earth.  WOW – this was incredible.

Graphing sites

 Fun:

check out these school related ones:

My friend Dean sent me the above links.   Using graphs to compare, contrast and think about the relationships of information can be a very powerful tool for understanding.  The coneptual development of graphing in mathematics establishes the foundational understanding of how to graph.  Metacognitive questioning and the use of graphs to construct meaning engages students in the exploration of deep understanding.

Wyndham Rewards (formerly triprewards)

I had my trip rewards account cancelled due to inactivity.  The trip rewards company [ http://www.triprewards.com/ ]  is now Wyndham Rewards company [ http://www.wyndhamrewards.com/ ]. I did not recieve a letter or an email regarding my account status.  I think this is where the company makes it's money - basically people don't cash in their points.  You would think that if they were a legitimate company they would communicate with their clients their account status - NOPE.  I do still recieve marketing emails; even though my account is closded.  End result is I LOST all the points collected.  The company is BRUTAL!!  Don't waste your time collecting points with them.  I tried talking on the phone with them and 'it's too bad so sad' attitude really made me mad.  I checked the better business bureau site and they get an F.  The lowest possible score. Yell
